Charms are some of the smallest pieces in a jewellery line, but stocking them well takes more than picking a few designs that look appealing in a photo. Size, how they actually attach, and how you build out an assortment all affect whether a charm sells through or sits in a drawer.
How charms attach
Almost every charm has a small loop or ring at its top, through which it's connected to a bracelet, chain, or another charm using a jump ring - the small open-and-close silver ring that's the standard connector for this kind of attachment. Because of this, a charm is rarely a self-contained purchase: sourcing charms usually means sourcing jump rings alongside them, in a gauge that suits the charm's own loop size. A jump ring that's too thin for a heavier charm can distort or open under normal wear; one that's too thick may not fit through a fine charm's loop at all.
Sizing for how a charm will actually be worn
A charm's real-world size needs to be judged against where it's going, not in isolation. A charm meant for a delicate chain bracelet, worn alongside several others, generally wants to stay small and light enough that a handful together don't overwhelm the wrist - while a single statement charm on a simple chain can carry more visual weight on its own. It's worth handling a sample against the actual chain or bracelet gauge it's intended for before committing to a bulk order, since scale is one of the easiest things to misjudge from a product photo alone.
Building an assortment, not just a list of designs
When stocking charms for retail, it generally works better to think in terms of a balanced assortment - a spread of general shapes and styles that different customers will each find something in - rather than committing heavily to a narrow set of very similar designs. A retailer building a charm-bracelet program, in particular, benefits from enough variety that a customer can build a genuinely personal combination, which is a large part of what makes charm bracelets appeal in the first place.
